Bond’s 2016 Quella is a wonderfully aromatic and intense Cabernet, drinking well now, but with much more promise to come in the bottle.
The hugely impressive and highly sought after wines of Bond are the brainchild of Harlan Estate’s Bill Harlan. Bill’s philosophy since the 1990s has been to engage with the owners of exceptional small-scale vineyards selected micro-climates in Napa Valley with a shared vision of Bond’s high quality ethos, to showcase, the potential, the diversity and character of the various sites in their artisanal wines. These very small, elite properties are like the ‘Grand Crus’ of the Napa Valley. Over the years the wines have risen in prowess, are critically acclaimed and proved to be some of the best Cabernets now available in the world.
There are now five vineyards in operation and Quella is from a steep southwest facing site located on an ancient riverbed and gets its name from the German word for a pristine water source.
“Savory and aromatic, the Quella impresses for its precision and captivating beauty. Intensely savory and aromatic, the 2016 is a Cabernet built on energy and tension. Time in the glass brings out a range of licorice, sage, spice, tobacco and cedar overtones, but more than anything else, the Quella is a wine of completeness and harmony that has really come together well over the last year.” Vinous
“… profound notes of blackcurrant cordial, blueberry pie and chocolate-covered cherries with hints of wild sage, tilled soil, underbrush, and tapenade plus a hint of cardamom. The full-bodied palate is firm and taut at this youthful stage, the tightly wound fruit framed with fine-grained tannins and amazing freshness, finishing very long.” Robert Parker
“…all of these offerings represent world-class Cabernet Sauvignons from Napa meant to endure 30 or more years of cellaring should one have the patience to wait that long.” Robert Parker
